Misconception about Elevator Operations
June 2025
We use the elevator almost everyday – but do we really understand about its’ operations? Consider the button that mentions “close” when pressed. Does it speed up the process of closing the elevator door – or in most cases, is it more of a “dummy
There are several misconceptions about elevator operations, which tend to create confusion or adds to the misuse of the elevators.
For example, the Auto Rescue Device (ARD) is tasked to bring the elevator to the nearest floor level during a power failure. The general perception is that the ARD will work in case of any breakdown – which doesn’t always happen.
Similarly, it is a common belief that the “door close” button in the elevator is provided for reducing the door close time. However, the reality is that the elevator door closing and opening time is pre-set though door speed setting.
The door open period is also pre-set considering the required time for passengers to come out of the cabin and new passengers to get into the elevator cabin. This door open time varies according to the elevator capacity - generally, it may be 20-25 seconds
It is possible that some time instead of its full capacity, only one or two passengers are coming out of the cabin and only one or two passengers are getting into the cabin. But according to the door setting the door will remain open for the preset period of 20-25 seconds. To avoid this delay and to cut short the waiting time, a door close button is provided in car operating panel. One can press this button and close the doors as per his desire to avoid any delay.
