Transforming Walls, Touching Souls

In a heartfelt endeavour to bring dignity, positivity, and healing to the lives of women battling mental health challenges, the Chairperson of the Indian Institute of Interior Designers (IIID) has launched a transformative initiative titled “Zindagi Rango Bhari” at the Female Ward of the Regional Mental Hospital, Thane.

This initiative is in coordination with IIID TRC, Parivartan, RCTGC and Rotractors and is primarily funded by Infra Market along with local artists and psychologists. This unique project aims to replace the dull, lifeless walls of the facility with vibrant, themebased murals that not only enhance the physical environment but also contribute meaningfully to the emotional well-being of the inmates.

“Zindagi Rango Bhari is not merely about painting walls — it’s about painting possibilities. It’s about letting colour speak where words fail, and using design as a medium of compassion, hope, and revival,” said Rashmi Tiwari, IIID TRC Chairperson.

The Power of Healing Through Design Research and experience both underline the impact of physical surroundings on mental health recovery. Environments filled with warmth, colour, and thoughtful design can help reduce anxiety, stimulate memory, and foster emotional stability. With this in mind, “Zindagi Rango Bhari” has been conceptualized as a theme-based wall art project, with each mural designed to uplift, soothe, and inspire.

The chosen themes reflect a spectrum of positive emotions and healing metaphors — from the nurturing embrace of nature to the joy of togetherness, inner strength, and aspirations for a brighter tomorrow. These artistic interventions aim to create a visually nurturing atmosphere, encouraging hope and emotional engagement among the women residents.

A Collective Effort for a Noble Cause The initiative is being executed in collaboration with volunteer interior designers, members of IIID TRC, the core team includes Trupti Puranik, Rashmi Tiwari, Neha Soni, Manjusha Shresth, Sushil Sule, Sadashiv Yadav, Suchit Gadakari, Maitryee; Rotary club of Thane Green City, Rotaractors, Parivartan, an NGO, Infra market,(Shalimar Paints) along with the local artists, psychologists, and hospital authorities. The involvement of mental health professionals ensures that the artwork is emotionally appropriate and therapeutically supportive.

This initiative is a part of IIID’s ongoing commitment to using design as a tool for social change — reaffirming the belief that well-thought-out spaces have the power to transform not only how people live, but how they feel. “When surroundings begin to heal, the soul follows. That is the belief behind Zindagi Rango Bhari,” the Chairperson concluded.
